Hagåtña, Guam – Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio led a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Route 1 Resurfacing Project in Tamuning, marking the conclusion of a major infrastructural investment with improvements to one of the island’s main thoroughfares.

The project included resurfacing from Route 1 and Route 30 (Governor Carlos G. Camacho Street) to Route 10A (Airport Road). Upgrades include new milling and overlaying, full and partial depth repairs, repair of drainage inlets, replacement of utility manholes and sign panels, and new striping. Additional milling and paving of approximately 200 feet onto Route 10A and 14B was also performed. The $7.2 million dollar project was funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration and completed by Hawaiian Rock Products.

“The foundation of a more safe and prosperous future begins with ensuring we have a more safe and prosperous road to recovery. This meant committing to the fundamental work of improving the infrastructure our people use every day to get to work, school, and beyond,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “This highway sees a traffic volume of over 33,000 vehicles each day. It is our island’s busiest highway, connecting central to the north, and many working families to their jobs. We join our island in celebrating this major milestone and a stronger foundation for all of us.”

“This road was last rehabilitated in 1996, a little more than 25 years ago, and many of our island’s young people, who are beginning their careers and starting their families, have never in their life seen this level of investment into the roads they drive every day,” said Lt. Governor Tenorio. “For their parents and grandparents, they know this project has been long needed and overdue. We thank the people of Guam for their patience with our progress, and for taking these roads to seize the opportunities of a better life as we march together toward a stronger recovery.”
