Hagatna – Jon Fernandez, Superintendent of the Department of Education (DOE), and Mark Mendiola, Chairman of the Education Board both support Governor Eddie Calvo’s proposed legislation in Bill 245-34.

“We do not support rolling back the investment that the government has already made in our workforce, especially in our teachers and our school staff,” said DOE Superintendent, Jon Fernandez.  “Please do not cut the salaries of our hard working employees who take care of our children every day,” added Fernandez.

Fernandez also said that the investment in school facilities is an idea he put on the table in his state of education address, and Governor Calvo’s bill (Bill 245) addresses those improvements.

“We fully and strongly support Bill 245 which not only provides a revenue solution to help mitigate but also provides a 2 year investment worth a total of $30 million to keep our facilities in good repair, and safe,” – said Mark Mendiola, Chairman of the Guam Education Board.

Bill 245 addresses the needs of both the Department of Education and a dedicated funding source to the Guam Memorial Hospital.
