STATE OF MOURNING: On the passing of former Dededo Commissioner Martin C. Benavente

Governor Eddie Baza Calvo and Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio are mourning the late Commissioner Martin C. Benavente who passed away early this morning.

The Governor has declared a state of mourning and all flags will be flown at half-staff until the date of Interment, which will be announced at a later date.

Below are statements from the Governor and Lieutenant Governor.

“I am in shock at this news and my heart grieves for a good man and a good friend,” said Governor Calvo. “He brought to the Calvo-Tenorio family his love and compassion for the people of Guam, the people he had served and for whom he sacrificed much for decades.”

Lt. Governor Tenorio, following this morning’s viewing at the Guam Regional Medical City, said the island has lost a great advocate for the people, particularly those in need.

“Martin walked the walk, his compassion was boundless. He didn’t just talk about what needed to be done to help people, he would take time to talk to them, find out what they needed and then find a solution that worked for them,” Lt. Governor Tenorio stated. “He will be sorely missed by many and we grieve together with his wife, Niki, their children, grandchildren and his extended family.”
