GHURA begins construction on Phase I of RENEWAL Homes Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 24, 2012

Phase I of ten new affordable homes in the Dededo area will be available for qualified first time home-buyers through the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority’s RENEWAL Homes Project. Governor Eddie Baza Calvo and GHURA broke ground on a $1.4 million affordable housing project this morning and are looking forward to bringing this new opportunity for homeownership to Guam’s families.

“Guam has one of the lowest homeowner rates in the nation.  It’s time to change this and make sure that all Guamanians have the opportunity to raise their families in a home they can call their own,” Governor Calvo said.   “This is one of our most important initiatives in the administration’s mission to improve the quality of life for everyone in this community.”

The project is being funded through FY 2011 HOME Investment Partnership and Community Development Block Grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Each single family home is a three bedroom, two bathroom unit and is estimated to be about 1,250 square feet, inclusive of a covered carport. Project completion is scheduled for summer 2012 for Phase I, consisting of the first five homes, and fall 2012 for Phase II.

The Calvo Tenorio administration is committed to accomplishing a goal of building 3,000 affordable homes by 2014.
