Press Update: January 19, 2011
(Adelup, Guam) Government employees and consumers living with disabilities, including children, spoke with Governor Eddie Baza Calvo and Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio during their visits to government agencies today.
The Governor and Lieutenant Governor visited with employees from the Departments of Mental Health & Substance Abuse, and Integrated Services for Individuals with Disabilities. They are visiting government of Guam agencies throughout this month to assess the situations within these agencies and to meet personally with employees.
The DMHSA staff, headed by acting Director Wilfred G. Aflague, was joined by representatives of several other organizations including; Healing Hearts Crisis Center, I Famagu’on-ta, and Guam Social Services.
“The greatest asset of any organization is its employees. As we address the cash crisis we’re in, I want to make sure you have the resources to meet your missions,” Governor Calvo told the DMHSA staff. “Our administration will do this by starting with the stabilization of finances and services and then follow with the improvement of them.”
The group met with consumers waiting for placement into one of nine residential homes.
The Governor and Lt. Governor spent a few minutes with each of the children in the Children’s Inpatient Unit, currently home to five children. Children affected with depression, ADHD, conduct disorder and schizophrenia are treated in this unit.
DMHSA treats about 1,600 day patients.
“The employees are a great example of the kind of service our community thrives on,” Lieutenant Governor Tenorio said. “It’s doing the best we can with the resources we have to help our people, especially those who are most vulnerable. I commend the employees for their commitment to Guam during these challenging times.”
