1,200+ Youth Participants to Gain GovGuam Experience Beginning June 20, 2022

Hagåtña, Guam – Governor Lou Leon Guerrero has expanded employment opportunities for Guam’s youth by providing the funding necessary to onboard nearly double the initial cap of participants for the annual Governor’s Summer Youth Employment Program (GSYEP).

The Department of Youth Affairs (DYA) received over 1,300 applications for the youth program as of June 7, 2022. The anticipated cap of participants was 650. DYA, in collaboration with the Guam State Clearinghouse and the Department of Administration, expressed confidence in their ability to accommodate the revised total of 1,200+ participants with additional funding. The Governor’s Summer Youth Employment Program is federally funded by the Education Stabilization Fund (ESF) and will cost $2.4 million.

“In support of our young people and the future we are building together, our Administration has approved the funding to double the amount of youth employment opportunities available through this successful program,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “This action will also boost the productivity of our public agencies over the next month and expand the potential of our island’s future leaders.”

“The increasing number of youth wanting to engage in our government, and during a critical period of our pandemic recovery, is a testament to the strength of our community,” said Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio. “More of Guam’s young people are signing up to serve our island, and our Administration stands committed to helping them gain experience and explore careers.”

The program will run from June 20 to July 29, 2022. Students will work 30 hours per week at nearly 80 different government offices islandwide. Participants will gain real-world government entry-level work experience, get a chance to improve their interpersonal communication skills, obtain career choice advice and educational guidance, make connections for future career opportunities, be mentored by positive adult role models, build a resume for future jobs or college applications, and earn a paycheck.
