Hagåtña, Guam – Governor Lou Leon Guerrero was recently inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), making her the first nurse governor in the United States to receive this prestigious recognition. The American Academy of Nursing is renowned for honoring leaders whose careers have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to advancing nursing practice, policy, and education. Induction into the Academy not only highlights an individual nurse’s accomplishments but also underscores the collective contributions of the nursing profession. The induction ceremony was held on November 2, 2024, in Washington, D.C., where Governor Leon Guerrero joined nearly 200 other nurses–from across the nation and 14 countries–who have made exceptional contributions to the nursing field.
“I am deeply honored to join the ranks of such distinguished nursing professionals whose work has transformed lives across the globe,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “This recognition reaffirms my lifelong dedication to nursing and the essential role our profession plays in building stronger, healthier communities. I share this honor with my fellow nurses, whose compassion and expertise continue to inspire me.”
Governor Leon Guerrero’s induction into the Academy recognizes her personal achievements and shines a spotlight on the vital role of nurses in Guam and the Pacific region. Her nomination and selection for this honor reflect a lifetime dedicated to improving the health and well-being of communities. Before entering public service, she was a critical care nurse, served five terms as a Senator, passed numerous laws improving the quality of health care on our island, and later as an executive in the banking industry, where she continued to advocate for public health initiatives. Her tenure as Governor has been marked by a focus on improving Guam’s healthcare infrastructure, expanding access to services, and fostering community health education.
In addition to her induction, Governor Leon Guerrero was one of four nursing leaders to give opening remarks during a special presentation for “Courageous Careers: The Power to Envision and Transform,” spotlighting how her nursing career has influenced her as a Guam leader.
