Hagåtña, Guam – In preparation for the long-awaited renovation of the Hagåtña Pool, multiple Government of Guam agencies are working together to restore and revitalize one of the island’s most cherished recreational spaces. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, July 3 at 9:30 a.m., to officially launch the project.
Ahead of the ceremony, teams from the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the Department of Public Works (DPW) have been actively coordinating the site preparation and project logistics. In a show of interagency cooperation, the Department of Corrections (DOC) has also stepped in to support early cleanup efforts. This week, DOC inmates were deployed to clear overgrown brush and algae buildup around the pool area, significantly improving access and visibility for incoming construction crews. Additionally, the Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) is assisting with the pumping of water out of the pool, and UMS Hardfill is providing support for the disposal of junk and metal removed from the property.
“We are committed to restoring the Hagåtña Pool for our families, our student athletes, and the entire community,” said Acting Governor Josh Tenorio. “This renovation marks the beginning of a new chapter for a space that has brought generations together. I want to thank the hard-working teams for stepping up and laying the groundwork for what’s to come.”
Originally built in the 1970s, the Hagåtña Pool has long served as a training ground for youth swimmers and a gathering place for families. The $8.8 million renovation project, made possible through funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), will include major structural repairs, accessibility upgrades, energy-efficient systems, and modern amenities designed to meet the community’s long-term needs.
The Leon Guerrero-Tenorio Administration invites the public to attend Thursday’s groundbreaking ceremony and join in the effort to restore this iconic community space.
