Hagåtña, Guam – The National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) has opened the application period for the fourth annual Lt. Governors’ STEM Scholarship Program, sponsored by ACT, to award up to $1,000 to 12 schools nationally to support STEM-related activities for youth. Applications will be accepted until March 7, 2025, with award recipients announced and funded in Spring 2025.
“STEM education is not just a pathway to personal achievement, but the foundation for our island’s future resilience and prosperity,” said Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio. “By investing in scholarships and opportunities for our students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, we are equipping them with the tools to lead in solving the world’s most complex challenges—from climate change to technological innovation. These investments are about more than academic success; they are about creating a generation of leaders and thinkers who will strengthen our economy, improve the quality of life on Guam, and inspire progress that benefits our island and the global community. When we support STEM education, we build a legacy of innovation and ensure that our people are ready to meet future demands. I encourage all eligible schools to apply and take advantage of this opportunity.”
NLGA will award twelve scholarships to twelve schools in twelve different states and territories worth $10,000 total. The Scholarship Program is administered by NLGA, the nonpartisan, nonprofit association for the nation’s second-in-command, and sponsored by ACT, whose mission is to help people succeed in their education and careers.
“ACT is proud to once again sponsor this program,” ACT CEO Janet Godwin said. “ACT data shows that the current state of STEM readiness is cause for serious concern. ACT is uniquely poised to meet this moment, and working alongside NLGA, we are committed to ensuring that all students leave high school prepared to enter a world of evolving postsecondary and work opportunities, including through access to a high-quality STEM education.”
All public, private, and tribal schools in the 50 states and five U.S. territories are invited to apply at nlga.awardsplatform.com. Funding will be awarded to schools to support STEM-related activities, programming, curriculum, equipment, and other expenses.
“The need for increased educational opportunities in STEM is non-partisan and an area of consensus for the nation’s lieutenant governors,” said NLGA Executive Director Kellie Rittershausen. “NLGA has adopted STEM Education as a pillar of work for the association on behalf of Members, who know the importance of educating students in STEM to prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.”
Applications will be reviewed in Spring 2025 with award winners announced at the NLGA Spring Business Meeting in April 2025. Additional information on the STEM Scholarship Program, including instructions for applying, can be found at https://nlga.us/strategies/nlga-state-strategies-in-stem/.
