Immediate Release: February 7, 2011
A 12-year old Guamanian girl could be selected Military Child of the Year. Keandra Marlaine McDonald, Mayor Paul McDonald’s granddaughter, has been selected as one of the top 20 semi-finalists for this honor.
She is representing the United States Coast Guard Service. Her father, Christopher Flores, is an active duty member of the branch and is currently stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. Hundreds of thousands of children were nominated. Keandra’s name was submitted for consideration by her parents.
“My daughter understands the meaning of sacrifice, and I’m so proud to watch her mature and grow as a military daughter over the years,” mother Stacy McDonald Flores said.
The official winner will be announced tomorrow, while other honors will be named sometime in March.
“Obviously, I’m proud a Guam daughter’s story of bravery, support, and strength has struck a chord with the selection committee,” Governor Calvo said. “I want to congratulate Keandra, her parents, and Mayor McDonald for raising such an inspirational young lady.”
