Calvo Leads Tour of Construction Site

John F. Kennedy High School is on track to open its doors next school year. That assurance, and other information was part of the first public update on the construction of the new JFKHS. Governor Eddie Baza Calvo toured both the school’s temporary campus at Tiyan and the construction site for the new campus in Upper Tumon yesterday. The visits were made possible through collaboration with Education Superintendent Nerissa Underwood and International Bridge Corporation, the company building the new school.
“I remember when the school was condemned. I remember when students began double session. And I remember when classes started at Tiyan. I’m so pleased this chapter is close to ending,” Governor Calvo said. “Everyone has been trying so hard to get this school built, and bringing the Islanders back home. All I can say is thank you to everyone who works day in and day out to make sure it happens.”
According to IBC President Robert Toelkes, five buildings were renovated, eight were constructed, and the athletic field was expanded. The new campus will also boast a gymnasium with an approximate capacity of 1000 people, and increased green space. IBC’s contract also includes money to move collateral equipment from the Tiyan site, and to purchase supplemental equipment. underway.
Another welcome addition to the new school will be a dedicated wing for vocational education in partnership with the Guam Community College. Automotive, carpentry, and culinary arts classes will be offered in a single building.
Vincent Leon Guerrero, Special Assistant and Chief Education Advisor adds IBC and DPW are interfacing on traffic issues, to mitigate and minimize any impacts when students return to the Upper Tumon campus.
“When this school opens in the fall, it will be a bright moment in our history,” Governor Calvo said. “A new campus is like a blank canvas, endless possibilities for a beautiful future.”
