Governor Calvo signs 11 Bills into law
Governor Eddie Baza Calvo has signed 11 bills into law that pave the way for new economic initiatives, provide support to the Department of Revenue and Taxation, and create tougher penalties for criminals. Senators Tony Ada, Tina Muña Barnes, Mike Limtiaco, Brant McCreadie, Rory Respicio, and Aline Yamashita attended a signing ceremony in the Governor’s Cabinet Conference Room for the measures.
Creating a Bed & Breakfast industry
The first Bill Governor Calvo signed was Bill No. 92-32, now Public Law 32-045. The measure would change zoning laws to allow for Bed & Breakfast establishments. It was authored by Sen. Mike Limtiaco.
“I’m excited for the start of this new industry. I encourage anyone interested in this potential business to contact my office for more information,” Sen. Limtiaco said.
Increasing the penalty for home invasions
Governor Calvo also signed Bill No. 119-32 as Public Law No. 32-047. The measure, authored by Sen. Tony Ada, adds the crime of home invasion into law. The new law punishes those who commit this crime with a first-degree felony, and imposes a minimum of ten years of prison for those found guilty. According to the law, any sentence for home invasion may not be suspended, and shall run consecutively to any other sentence for other crimes committed in conjunction with the home invasion.
Helping DRT capture more tax revenue
Public Law No. 32-055, which was introduced as Bill No. 127-32, will help the resource-strapped Department of Revenue and Taxation capture more tax revenue. The law will appropriate $100,000 to DRT to help implement the “Cash Economy Enforcement Act of 2011.” That program aims to properly assess taxes to cash-based transactions and businesses.
“DRT and its employees do the best they can with the limited resources it has. I thank Speaker Won Pat, Senator Muña Barnes and the other senators who put their money where their mouths are. These lawmakers understand the tough position these employees are in, so they are willing to give the support to DRT to capture more tax revenue,” Governor Calvo said.
