Crews to widen road to add right turn lanes into Wusstig Road and onto Marine Corps Drive

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 21, 2012

Yigo residents who deal with the traffic and safety issues on Wusstig Road will see roadwork in the area tomorrow. In an effort to alleviate any safety concerns about the right turns onto Marine Corps Drive and into Wusstig road, the Department of Public Works will move forward with the long-waited traffic signalization project, which has been on hold.

“This area has been a traffic and safety nightmare for the thousands of residents who live and work in Yigo and Dededo,” Governor Calvo said.  “I want people there to know that we are paying attention to their issues and we are improving services for them.”

GEMCCO, the project contractor, will work to widen southbound traffic lanes on Marine Corps Drive to accommodate right turn lanes. Construction will begin tomorrow February 22, 2012 at 9 a.m.  Traffic lanes for both directions will be shifted north around the work zone to accommodate the flow of traffic.
“I’m glad this important project is back in motion.  I really thank the men and women of DPW for making this happen,” Governor Calvo said.
The traffic signalization project that began in August 2009 was originally slated for completion last May.  However, residents and businesses in the area raised concerns regarding safety issues that may arise because of the original designs of the roadwork plans. A change order was requested by DPW for the project to make modifications and to address these concerns.

Currently, the entire project is 62 percent complete and is scheduled for full completion by the end of June 2012. This project is entirely funded through Federal Highway Administration funds.
