Vice Chairman Ric Calvo remembered

Today, the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority added five more homes to their growing list of available housing units for Guamanians to realize their dreams of homeownership in Talofofo. This is in addition to once-abandoned units that were completed last week in Merizo.
Christmas came early for “God’s Country” when Governor Eddie Baza Calvo, the board, staff and management of GHURA, Talofofo Mayor Vicente Taitague, and residents cut the ribbon to indicate the completion of the Renaissance Rental units project. This is part of the administration’s Affordable Housing Initiative.
Like the homes in Merizo, these units were built in the 1970s to house teachers who were recruited from off-island. The homes were left abandoned, and over the years have not been maintained. GHURA used $337,500 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant to refurbish the derelict buildings. The five homes are ready for low- to moderate-income families to call them ‘home.’
“These projects are a testament to the passion of everyone here who believes in he Guamanian Dream,” said Governor Calvo. “Soon, these will be homes for Guamanians who need them.”
“This is the holiday season – this is a time for giving, but it’s also a time for renewal and hope for the future,” said Governor Calvo. “What better way to celebrate the season than to have these homes open and available for Guamanian families to share and create memories.”
The mood of the ribbon cutting and blessing ceremony was one of excitement and reflection. Before the ribbon was cut and the homes blessed, attendees took a moment of silence to remember former vice chairman of the GHURA board, Ric Calvo. He was a tireless proponent of affordable housing for Guamanians. He passed away last week.
