WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Whereas, women lead in a variety of professional and academic fields. They make significant contributions to our changing society. Generations of women worked tirelessly to build our great island. That tradition continues in the hearts and actions of Guamanian women today.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we honor the numerous contributions women have made throughout Guam’s history enriching our culture, strengthening our island, and providing opportunities for future generations. Women are at the forefront of entrepreneurship, creating new jobs, and building Guam’s economy.
This year’s theme “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics,” recognizes Guamanian women who used their intelligence, imagination, sense of wonder and tenacity to make extraordinary contributions to the STEM fields.
The story of Guam’s women is told through the strength, courage and dedication of women making daring changes to improve our island. During Women’s History Month, we reflect on the extraordinary accomplishments of women, which serve as a source of strength and inspiration to others.
As Guam commemorates Women’s History Month, we congratulate members of the Guam Women’s Club. Established 61 years ago, the Guam Women’s Club has grown from a small organization into what is known as the Guam Council of Women that includes the following organizations: Soroptimist International Guam, Soroptimist International of the Marianas, Guam Women’s Club, International Women’s Club of Guam, Chinese Ladies Association of Guam, Guam Memorial Hospital Volunteers Association, Korean Women’s Association of Guam, Filipino Ladies Association of Guam, Palau Women’s Club, Rigalu Foundation, Japan Club of Guam, Guam Latte Lions Club, Pangasinan Ladies Club of Guam, and the American Association of University of Women, the National Association in Construction, and the Bank of Guam Women in Business Programs, Chamber Business Women’s Network.
Through their work, we build on the legacy of millions of women who have molded the character of our island. We must ensure women have opportunities to excel and receive equal pay in the workplace. We must work together to guarantee future generations of women will excel and progress without gender being an issue.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, EDDIE BAZA CALVO, I Maga’ LÃ¥hen GuÃ¥han, Governor of Guam, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Organic Act of Guam, as amended, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2013 as Women’s History Month.  It is my privilege to recognize and honor the many contributions women make to our society and for their continued commitment to making our island, and our world, a better place. I urge everyone in our community to remember the great women throughout history whose strength, courage, faith and conviction inspires a movement that brings opportunities for all.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereby set my hand and cause the Great Seal of Guam to be affixed in the Capital City of HagÃ¥tña on this Eighth day of Marchin the year of our Lord, Anno Domini, Two Thousand Thirteen.
