Hagåtña, Guam – Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio issued the following statements on the selection of Mayor of Dededo Melissa Savares as the 2022 Friend of Education by the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE):
“We join our island in extending our congratulations to Mayor Savares upon her deserved recognition as a champion of our community who has historically empowered our children,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “This is a source of pride for all of Guam, and a reminder that our mayors are making impactful change in their villages worthy of national respect. We are truly humbled to work alongside Mayor Savares, whom we thank for her legacy of steadfast service.”
“Throughout her tenure, Mayor Savares has helped to support youth sports teams, expand student tutoring and mentorship opportunities, recruit more foster families, and strengthen substance abuse prevention efforts,” said Lt. Governor Tenorio. “It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a born leader to lift up the next generation. Mayor Savares is symbolic of a true public servant whose passionate contributions continue to make the lives of our children better.”
The NASBE Friend of Education award is given annually to an individual or organization whose contributions to preK-12 education are significant and enduring. NASBE’s full slate of awards will be presented at its Annual Conference from October 26 to 29, 2022, in Phoenix, Arizona.
