| Taiwanese, Australian Trade Missions Planned Regional Relations Continue to Grow under Calvo’s Leadership Immediate Release: February 2, 2011 Regional partnerships and collaborations continue to build under the leadership of Governor Eddie Baza Calvo and Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio. Taiwan This afternoon, Governor Calvo met with Paul Wang, Director General for the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Guam. During the meeting, it was announced Taiwanese companies will hold a trade mission on Guam sometime in March. “When we talk about capital improvement projects, I want to make sure we use as much green technology as possible. Taiwan can definitely help Guam make environmentally-friendly improvements before, during, and after the military buildup,” Governor Calvo said. “I also want to tap into Taiwan’s expertise in the agriculture industry. If we can give our farmers better tools and resources, we can expand and diversify Guam’s economy.” Australia Late yesterday afternoon, Governor Calvo and Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio met with Australian member of parliament Richard Marles, Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs. “A number of Australian businesses have contributed to Guam already,” Governor Calvo told MP Marles. “Some leave when a boom is over, some stay and make Guam their homes. Our challenge is to figure out how to sustain the good times for Guamanians and keep trade going when the buildup is over.” The military buildup was the focus of much of the conversation, but trade opportunities, commerce, regional relations throughout the Pacific, and sports tourism were also discussed. “It’s on our radar,” MP Marles said of the buildup. “The buildup on Guam is something Australians think about. I’m sure there are contributions Australian companies can make; there is much we can learn from each other.” Additionally, MP Marles announced a trade delegation is expected to visit Guam sometime next month. The visits follow Governor Calvo’s productive meeting with President of the Federated States of Micronesia Emanuel Mori. |
