JOINT INFORMATION CENTER
Release No. 15
October 6, 2014 (10:00 a.m. ChST)
As of 10:00 a.m., Governor Calvo along with Brig. Gen. Toth have returned Guam to Condition of Readiness (COR) 4. Typhoon Vongfong has passed and the damaging winds are no longer a threat to our island.
GovGuam agencies are still doing their assessments and have been throughout the duration of the storm. We expect the island to go back to normalcy as the day progresses.
Although Guam has received the all-clear, we encourage residents to remain safe while on the roads. The National Weather Service (NWS) has a flash flood watch still in effect. As a precaution, residents are advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility, and poor braking action.
According to Warning Coordinator Meteorologist, Chip Guard of NWS, the worst conditions have passed. Guam had maximum sustained winds of 45 to 50mph at the Northern part of the island, with Vongfong’s closest point of approach having passed at 3:00am Monday morning. NWS has advised we can still expect winds up to 40mph as Vongfong leaves our vicinity.
All GovGuam agencies are expected to open at 1:00 p.m. today with employees to report to their respective agencies. GovGuam schools remain closed.
Anyone who requires additional shelter upon COR 4 will be relocated to Astumbo Gym, DPW transportation will be provided to shelterees that need assistance to Astumbo Gym.
