January 25, 2018

Our island’s families are invited to enjoy an afternoon at McDonald’s restaurant in Harmon on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The Department of Youth Affairs, in partnership with non-profit organizations and government office is hosting its first Youth Services Outreach. Partners in this community-wide event include, the Guam Police Department, Sanctuary Inc., DMHSA’s I’ Famagu’on-ta, Tamuning Mayor’s Office, Micronesian Resource Center, and Island Girl Power. These groups will share information on their organization and community-partnership opportunities.

DYA is commonly known for the youth correctional facility it operates, however, there also are prevention and outreach services in community through its resource centers in Dededo, Mangilao, and Agat. Each location offers after-school activities, such as arts and crafts projects, games and assistance with homework. They even have some computer labs. Case management, crisis intervention, and counseling services are also available. Families interested in learning more about the services provided at our Resource Centers are encouraged to join in the fun. They also can simply give the office a call and ask for details.

“The Youth Services Outreach event will allow DYA to bring that information, along with other organizations, to Harmon,” states DYA Director Peter Alecxis Ada, who coordinated the outreach. “We need to help the families with their children before it is too late and the children end up locked up getting into trouble and possibly in DYA.”

The outreach will be held on the 2nd floor of McDonalds in Harmon. There will be giveaways while supplies last. Sanctuary Inc. is hosting a face painting station.

For details about the outreach or any services, please contact DYA at 735-5010/36 or visit the Resource Centers.
