Lt. Colonel Esther J.C. Aguigui appointed to Adjutant General
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Monday, January 28, 2019
Hagåtña, Guam – Governor Lou Leon Guerrero today announced a new appointment to lead the
Guam National Guard. Lieutenant Colonel Esther Aguigui will assume the role of Adjutant
General of the Department of Military Affairs. Her nomination will be formally submitted for
confirmation to the Guam Legislature.
“Lt. Governor Tenorio and I are pleased to announce Esther Aguigui as the Adjutant General of
the Guam National Guard. We have the utmost trust and confidence that she is the best soldier to
lead the Guam National Guard into its next chapter. With three decades of service to the Nation
and Territory, she is the model soldier who has greatly represented our Guam National Guard
through her exemplary work,” said Governor Leon Guerrero, who is the Commander-In-Chief of
the Guam National Guard.
Leon Guerrero adds, “We thank General Roderick Leon Guerrero for his service and sacrifice in
the defense of our island and our nation.”
Adjutant General Esther Aguigui
Adjutant General Aguigui started as an enlisted Service Member in the Air Force Reserve before
transferring to the Air National Guard where she was the first female sergeant in the
organization. She moved on to be an officer in the U.S. Army/Guam Army National Guard and is
notably the first woman to command a battalion level in the Guam National Guard as well as the
first female locally to graduate from the U.S. Army War College. Her military service includes
deployments to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Fort Magsaysay,
Republic of the Philippines in support of Balikatan 2011 Exercise and Louisiana to assist with
Hurricane Katrina. Her accolades include a Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medals, the
Army Commendation Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign
Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service (Expeditionary) Medal.
