Hagåtña, Guam – Focused on managing Guam’s dengue response efforts, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero has dispatched Lieutenant Governor Joshua Tenorio to lead an aggressive federal mission. During the two-week mission, the Lieutenant Governor will work to advance Guam’s agenda on several federal issues. These issues include: the Guam Buildup, federal land return, the extension of Medicaid funds set to expire on October 1, decolonization, War Claims, and the H-2B labor shortage.
“My focus is on managing our response efforts right here at home. I can do that because I know Lieutenant Governor Josh will represent Guam well during these important meetings and work sessions,” the Governor said.
Additionally, and in recognition of a joint effort among the Office of the Governor, the University of Guam’s Center for Island Sustainability, and the Global Island Partnership, Guam has been invited to participate in a high-level event at the United Nations Climate Week centered on the U.N.’s 2030 Initiative for Sustainable Development.
“Islands in the Pacific contribute the least to global warming but our neighbors are dealing with its harmful effects every day. Armed with this knowledge and information, and as leaders of our island, the Governor and I are taking proactive steps to combat climate change and support sustainable development on a global scale. That includes promoting the U.N.’s goals on sustainability,” Lieutenant Governor Tenorio said.
In advance of Lieutenant Governor Tenorio’s participation in climate change activities with the U.N., Governor Leon Guerrero signed Executive Order 2019-23 creating the Guam Green Growth Working Group. The goal of the Working Group is to support a public-private partnership approach to solutions and programs consistent with the U.N.’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
“Green initiatives do more than protect our environment, the technology and innovation they inspire can expand our economy and create sustainable jobs,” said Governor Leon Guerrero.
