Hagåtña, Guam – The U.S. Department of the Interior has awarded Guam $2,196,251 in Fiscal Year 2021 grant funding through the Office of Insular Affairs’ Energizing Insular Communities (EIC) program. Governor Lou Leon Guerrero received notice of the award on September 28 and will be utilizing the funding for high-priority energy projects relative to the following:
- $1,291,938 to the Guam Power Authority for energy updates at the University of Guam
- $475,200 to the Guam Community College for a 100-kW solar PV system
- $274,587 to the University of Guam for the Guam Strategy Energy & Action Plan
- $154,526 to the Guam Power Authority for LED lighting upgrades at Tamuning Elementary School
“Our island should be a beacon of sustainable energy, and this welcomed federal funding will go a long way towards accomplishing our energy-reducing and cost-cutting goals,” said Governor Lou Leon Guerrero. “We know that the cost of fuel and energy on our island is extremely high, nearly three times higher than the U.S. national average. This funding stands to support a variety of our energy retrofitting and efficiency projects and will provide our educational institutions and our people thousands in savings.”
“Our Administration has been committed to promoting energy and economic security through pursuing policies that support and advance island sustainability,” added Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio. “Envisioning a new Strategic Energy Plan will open the door for our island to receive more federal funding and empower our pursuit of renewable and sustainable energy projects, all from the focal point of our Guam Green Growth movement.”
