Hagatna, Guam. The Director of Communications sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request today to Speaker’s Benjamin Cruz’s requesting information on historic medical travel taken by senators of the 32nd, 33rd, and 34th Guam Legislatures.
The intent of the request is to get a better understanding of which senators receive regular medical treatment at off-island facilities. This may answer the question why there has been no public hearing scheduled after four months for two lifesaving GMH bills that would fully fund and modernize the hospital.
To date, no action has been taken by either Speaker BJ Cruz or Senator Regine Biscoe Lee. Both senators have the immediate authority to schedule a public hearing
“There was a concern raised by the public, that certain senators may not see an urgency to help GMH and schedule these bills, because they have the financial means to receive healthcare off island,” according to Director of Communications Oyaol Ngirairkl. “The constituent felt a hearing may not have been scheduled because certain senators are out of touch with the challenges faced by working families. While I hope this is untrue, the intent of the request is to put the matter to rest and answer any outstanding concerns on this issue at the next town meeting.”
The Speaker has four working days to provide the information. Results of the request will be shared with the public.
