NEWS: Crowning of Liberation Day Queen, fireworks, kicks off 2017 Liberation Day Carnival tomorrow
The 73rd Liberation Day “Strength in Unity” festivities will kick off tomorrow with the traditional crowning of the Liberation Day Queen. Here are other things you can look forward to tomorrow and this week as the island kicks off this annual celebration:
CARNIVAL
• The Liberation Day Carnival will be held at Paseo. It starts tomorrow and grounds will be opened at 6 p.m. with an official opening ceremony to welcome the community.
• Kaemiha Muna of Santa Rita is this year’s Liberation Day Queen. She and her court will be crowned during the opening ceremony. There will be fireworks at 8 p.m.
• The Carnival will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. The last day of the carnival is Aug. 13.
• There will be a food truck station and other food vendors. There will be games, face painting and other family-friendly activities, as well as nightly entertainment.
LOOP CLOSURE & CARNIVAL PARKING
• Public parking will be restricted at the Chamorro Village, to the Marine Corps Drive parking lot.
• ADA parking will be at the parking lot behind Chamorro Village, facing the Paseo Stadium.
• Vehicle access to Paseo will be at the Fishermen’s Co-op traffic light. The entrance near the Guam Seal Park will be closed.
• Public parking is across the street in Hagåtña.
PARADE
• Department of Parks and Recreation will be accepting applications for parade tent sites Thursday morning at 8 a.m. Applicants are requested to enter through the Paseo Stadium main gates to the DPR office.
• Tent sites are on both sides of Marine Corps Drive.
• Reservations will be handled on a first-come, first-serve basis and only ONE permit will be issued per adult applicant after showing proof of valid picture identification.
• The fee is $50 per space payable upon registration.
• Temporary Vendor Permits will be issued to vendors and vendors must provide a copy of their business license, health certificate and a fee of $100 for (profit organization), $50 for (non-profit). Permit fees are non-refundable.
• A cleaning deposit fee of $75 shall be made in cash or on-island check payable to the Treasurer of Guam. Please bring exact change; payments will be handled on a separate basis. The cleaning deposit fee is refundable provided that all trash is removed and there were no damages to the park area. Your deposit will be refunded to you only upon surrender of the original deposit receipt; proof of identification and a signed permit inspection by DPR personnel.
• For safety and sanitary reasons, campers will be allowed to set-up at 8 a.m., Thursday, July 20, 2017 and must vacate no later than 6 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2017. DPR Territorial Park Patrol Officers will remove any markers or shelters installed prior to the indicated time and the owner’s permit will be revoked. For more information, call DPR at 475-6288/91.
