Hagåtña – Guam Police Department (GPD) was a recipient of $28,415 in funding grant released by the U. S. Department of Interior for their K9 Unit Specialized Vehicle Equipment Requisition Project.
Last year, GPD acquired two new police dogs for its K-9 unit. K-9 vehicles must come equipped with safety features installed for the police dogs such as heat alarm systems, which prevent canines from dying of heatstroke, to crush resistant kennels.
“The K9 specialized vehicle equipment will greatly assist with police operations and while our on patrol as well as with the rest of the department,” said Chief of Police Joseph I. Cruz.
Prevention is key — the installation of the specialized vehicle equipment grants added safety features for both the K-9 Officer and the police dog.
Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio said, “Safety is paramount, always, and it’s evident that GPD continues to make this a priority for the hardworking officers within the department.”
