Hagåtña – Students living near Lucas Sablan Boulevard in the Gil Breeze area of Yigo have a new bus stop on a road that is being paved.

“Over the next year, we will be working on about 16 miles of village roads. This is an effort of the Department of Public Works and our Legislative colleagues who helped find the funding to pave or repave village roads,” Governor Calvo stated today while welcoming students.

“Imagine if we don’t fix this road? Ask the families of these kids what a danger it is to their safety. Sometimes, the difficult policy of raising taxes is necessary to fix infrastructure, especially for the safety of our children.”

This locally-funded project cost about $214,520 and covers about 2,550 feet of road. DPW’s Highways Division completed the base preparation for the road. Hawaiian Rock Products to do the final overlay.

“This was an investment in quality of life for our people, an investment in village roads, and an investment in your education,” Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio said.

With this new bus stop, the buses are now able to drive all the way into Gil Breeze to the new bus stop instead of dropping the kids off about a half-mile out.

“We’ve been working together from the beginning — from getting the water running, street lights, bus stops, and now the paving of the road. I want to thank the kids for making sure these things happen,” said Yigo Mayor Rudy Matanane.

“I want to thank everyone from the Highways Division and Bus Operations at DPW for making sure these things happen. Starting tomorrow, the buses will be able to pick up the kids right here in this road,” added DPW Director Glenn Leon Guerrero.
