NEWS: Senators, Community invited to attend Tax Refund public hearing on Thursday
Governor Eddie Baza Calvo and Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio invite the island community to participate in the Public Hearing to discuss the bill authorizing the issuance of General Obligation Tax and Revenue Anticipation Notes of the Government of Guam. The heart of this legislation is to provide tax refunds owed to the people of Guam into the hands of the people of Guam faster.
Acting Governor Ray Tenorio, an alumnus of the Legislature, will serve as the presiding officer of the public hearing. A letter was sent to Speaker Benjamin Cruz and the Senators of the 34th Guam Legislature, welcoming them to sit on the panel with the Acting Governor to accept public testimony and to ask the fiscal team questions on this effort to pay tax refunds as soon as the end of next month. All efforts are being taken to mirror the Legislature’s public hearing process as is reasonably practicable. A report of the proceedings of this hearing will be provided to the Guam Legislature for its consideration and deliberation of this bill at the April 28 special session called by the Governor.
As many of you recall, prior to the Calvo Tenorio Administration, it took years for the government to pay tax refunds. The CT Administration has cut down that wait time to a matter of months. We believe we can do better. The TRAN is a tool that can help us reach that goal. We also need you, the people of Guam, to support this legislation so we can get more tax refunds into the hands of our people by the end of May or the beginning of June.
The Public Hearing will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. in the Cabinet Conference Room, Ricardo J. Bordallo Governor’s Complex, Adelup.
