Hagåtña – The Umatac baseball field is getting a long overdue makeover; residents like Jerome Quinata were on-hand to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremonies alongside our island’s leaders.
“I want to thank GHURA for continuing its mission in helping build up our island’s quality of life. We want to give this village its due focus by moving forward with the final construction of their baseball field,” said Governor Eddie Baza Calvo during yesterday’s event.
The Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority (GHURA) will use the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds of $684,441 to upgrade and expand the Umatac Baseball Field.
“We are very proud to be down here today to see this project get started,” said GHURA Executive Director Michael J. Duenas.
The Umatac Baseball Field has not been functional for years due to a lack of funding to make the necessary improvements.
“Through the successful application of our office, the rehabilitation of the existing field will soon commence. I want to thank the Governor and his Administration because he is the Governor that did a lot for the village of Umatac,” stated Umatac Mayor Johnny A. Quinata.
Umatac resident Jerome Quinata said he’s looking forward to seeing the baseball field come back to life.
“It is a good day for the people of Umatac because we are excited and are looking forward to the construction of our baseball field,” he stated.
The Umatac baseball field project includes constructing, re-grading and resurfacing of both inner and outer fields, installing baseball field poles, fencing and new utility connections. It will feature construction of ADA compliant restrooms, dugouts, sidewalks, and a new parking area.
The Umatac field is one of several ongoing projects aimed at improving quality of life for our community. The Department of Parks and Recreation has upgraded a number of village gyms and parks, and is continuing that effort with projects such as a new gyms and a baseball stadium in Talofofo.
Just last week, Governor Calvo, GHURA officials, and Sinajana Mayor Robert Hoffman broke ground for the Sinajana baseball field rehabilitation project.
