(Hagåtña) – While deliberating Governor Calvo’s bill, some senators asked: Why the 2% increase?

Governor Calvo’s bill would increase the BPT by 2% – 1% of the increase would maintain government stability. The other 1% would provide a dedicated funding source for health and education — 0.75% would go to Guam Memorial Hospital and 0.25% would go to DOE.

If the senators choose to increase the BPT by only 1%, what are they willing to sacrifice? Are they willing to underfund the hospital and our island’s schools? Or will they decide a stable government isn’t worth it?

“I would not consider anything but the full 2-percent,” Lester Carlson, BBMR acting director, said.
