Hagåtña, Guam – On October 7, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court denied a petition filed by Attorney General Doug Moylan seeking to overturn the Guam Supreme Court’s decision that Guam Public Law 90-134, a 1990 abortion ban, had been repealed by laws the Guam Legislature subsequently passed. The Guam Supreme Court’s decision continues in effect, and abortion services remain legal in Guam.
“It is time to finally put this issue to rest, and now women can have access to safe and legal abortions,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “I am thankful that these essential healthcare services will continue to be available to our community and that these deeply personal decisions will continue to be made by women, their families, and their doctors.”
Jayne Flores, Director of the Bureau of Women’s Affairs, states: “Si Yu’os Ma’ase to all of the people who have fought to preserve Women’s healthcare rights, whether you have been out there or quietly fighting the fight through your vote. Please – KEEP. IT. UP.”
Finally, Governor Leon Guerrero extends her gratitude to her legal team, as well as her counsel of record before the U.S. Supreme Court, Stephen Vladeck, for his exceptional work defending the decision issued by the Guam Supreme Court.
