Hagåtña, Guam – The Leon Guerrero-Tenorio Administration is pleased to announce that Southern High School has successfully passed its public health inspection. This milestone results from a dedicated, multi-agency effort to address the school’s most pressing issues, made possible through the work of the Governor’s School Opening Readiness Team (SORT) and the strong support of the school and local community.

“This project was truly a labor of love,” said Acting Governor Josh Tenorio. “The successful inspection comes after what once seemed impossible, as the school had most recently received a ‘D’ rating due to serious health and safety concerns. Southern High had long been neglected. The campus required extensive work, especially the dormant Olympic-sized pool, which had to be drained at the peak of heavy weather to meet public health standards. We’re proud to have overcome this major hurdle. Still, we must stress the need for the Guam Department of Education (GDOE) to provide continued maintenance to keep the facility safe for our students.”

Moving forward, Acting Governor Tenorio stressed that the Guam Department of Education must provide a long-term plan for facility maintenance for campuses islandwide.

Inarajan Middle School is the final school pending its public health inspection results. Leading up to its inspection, skilled workers from across the government of Guam worked tirelessly through the weekends to bring the campus up to safety standards.
