Hagåtña, Guam – The Office of the Governor is proud to announce that Okkodo High School teacher Ms. Judy Naz was selected to receive a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

I have always believed that we have the best teachers on Guam. I want to congratulate Ms. Naz for this admirable recognition. This award demonstrates how dedicated our teachers are to our students,” Governor Leon Guerrero stated.

The National Science Foundation, on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), administers the PAEMST. Established in 1983, PAEMST is the highest award given by the U.S. Government to outstanding K-12 teachers for their contributions to the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science.

Awards are given to educators from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and the U.S. Territories as a group (Guam, American Samoa, CNMI, and the U.S. Virgin Islands).

To receive this top nod and be recognized among the best in the nation is a huge accomplishment and I am extremely proud of Ms. Naz’s work to educate our youth. Teachers are truly the foundation of a child’s education and they should always be celebrated for their selfless passion to our children,” said Lieutenant Governor Joshua Tenorio.

The panel of judges who evaluated applications before recommending nominees to the OSTP was comprised of distinguished mathematicians, scientists, and educators at the state and national levels. Teachers are selected based on their distinction in the classroom and dedication to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.

During an awards ceremony held on October 18 in Washington D.C., awardees received a special citation by the President and a $10,000 award from the NSF.
